5/13/2023 0 Comments Batgirl #36 by Cameron Stewart![]() Overall grades: Main A, Variant A, and Lego B+ You have no idea how strange I find it making commentary on a Lego character’s makeup. Cute, but I don’t see her wearing so much lipstick. There is also a Variant Lego cover, with a Lego Batgirl bursting through a white comic book page and a blue Lego background behind her. Solid coloring on this cover as well, with the violet and rose of Gotham highlighting her costume, and the teal from the signal showing off the title of this book. The smile on her face shows the joy she’s feeling as she’s making her escape. This cover features Batgirl leaping down from the Batsignal, where she’s just tagged the word girl underneath the bat logo. The Variant cover by Cliff Chiang is just as good. ![]() Bold colors always draw attention, and stop sign red punctuated with the yellow of the logo and our heroine’s cape are eye grabbers. The colors are so strong, it’s hard not to look at this cover. ![]() And you thought your day was going badly? Great image by Cameron Stewart with Batgirl looking amazing in flight. ![]() The covers: Leaping in the air to avoid being run over by the Jawbreakers, Batgirl has avoided one form of peril only to find herself in the paths of the beautiful bikers’ katanas. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Stolen Splendor by Miriam Minger![]() ![]() "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. He and Sophia are so perfect for one another that the story had to create an external factor keeping them apart because otherwise the story would be over too quick. Gabriel is a man who gave up the woman he loved (for reasons revealed in the book). OPINION: I really liked the characters and the last third of the book was really good with lots of drama and character driven issues. As the two join forces, they discover that what they felt for one another is not in the past. ![]() ![]() She doesn’t expect to find Gabriel again. She eavesdrops at doors and dons men’s clothing in order to make her way around town. Miss Sophia Hampton has always gone her own way. As he works to uncover what has happened in his absence, he has a reunion with the woman he loved and had to leave. THE STORY: Major Gabriel Prideaux has returned to England to find his older brother in a lunatic asylum with much left unexplained. The resolution of a years old separation was too simple for me. ![]() Published by Ava Stone on November 14th 2017įINAL DECISION: I liked the connection between the hero and heroine but the book had too slow a start for me as it covered a lot of backstory. ![]() ![]() The series spans 1912 to 1964 with nine novels, one volume of linked novellas, and two unrelated novellas. A dry and slowly dying world, Barsoom contains four different human civilizations, one non-human one, a scattering of science among swashbuckling, and a plethora of religions, mystery cities, and strange beasts. Our Saga: The adventures of Earthman John Carter, his progeny, and sundry other natives and visitors, on the planet Mars, known to its inhabitants as Barsoom. Readers hung on through the middle of 1913 until Burroughs brought a conclusion to the John Carter epic at the end of the year and made his hero into The Warlord of Mars. Did she kill Dejah Thoris? Or did the noble Thuvia take the blow instead? She may not even be alive, since the last moments that John Carter witnessed, the jealous thern woman Phaidor was ready to stab Carter’s love. ![]() A whole year must pass before the slow rotation of the chamber will allow Dejah Thoris to escape. ![]() John Carter will not return to the protagonist role until the eighth book, Swords of Mars, published twenty-one years later.Īt the end of the thrill-ride of The Gods of Mars, John Carter lost his love Dejah Thoris in the Chamber of the Sun within the Temple of Issus. ![]() Although there are still eight more books to go in the Mars series, with The Warlord of Mars I can bring to a conclusion Phase #1 of the saga: this completes the “John Carter Trilogy,” and the books that follow it take different paths with new heroes. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Amsterdam novel by ian mcewan![]() ![]() McEwan is very good at the spiky sort of witty unpleasantness of a certain sort of man, and both these men are in that category. They have been friends for a long time, and have still a friendship that is equal parts affection, competition, and disdain. Vernon and Clive have more in common than their mutual lover (deceased). Clive is a composer, writing a symphony for the millennium Vernon is the editor of The Judge, a newspaper that has been slowly declining for a long time and may be on its last legs. ![]() It opens with the funeral of Molly Lane, and conversation between two of her former lovers. While there are moments there, the full impact of the title isn’t clear for a while, and much of the novel takes place firmly on English soil. I had assumed – you can see why – that the novella took place in Amsterdam. ![]() I’ve been up and down with McEwan, but have somehow never read this Booker prizewinner – and now I have, it is right up there with my favourites of his.
